đŸ” Matcha in Brazil: A Story of Passion, Amazonian Flavors & My Love Affair with Liberdade

Written by MATCHA MAYA — a solo traveller following the world’s most memorable green cups. đŸ”

Matcha Maya’s note: What stayed with me in Brazil was not just the colour of the drink, but the small human moment around it—the conversation, the setting, and the feeling that I had found something local. ✨

Welcome to Brazil – where the Amazon meets matcha! đŸ‡§đŸ‡·

I'll never forget the moment I landed in SĂŁo Paulo. The city buzzed with an energy I had never felt before – a chaotic, beautiful symphony of honking cars, samba rhythms, and the intoxicating aroma of street food. I was exhausted from a 12-hour flight, but my excitement was electric.

I had come to Brazil for one reason: to discover how the world's largest Japanese community outside of Japan had blended their matcha traditions with Amazonian superfoods. And let me tell you – it did not disappoint.

My journey began in Liberdade. As I stepped out of the metro station, I felt like I had been transported to Tokyo. Lanterns hung overhead, Japanese characters adorned the storefronts, and the smell of freshly baked taiyaki filled the air. But there was something uniquely Brazilian about it – a warmth, a vibrancy, a samba rhythm that you wouldn't find in Japan.

I wandered into a tiny matcha bar tucked between a sushi restaurant and a manga shop. The owner, a Japanese-Brazilian woman named Yumi, welcomed me like an old friend. She handed me a matcha latte with a swirl of açaí, explaining that it was her "Amazonian twist."

One sip, and I was hooked. The earthy matcha balanced perfectly with the sweet, tropical açaí. I stayed for hours, talking to Yumi about her family's journey from Japan to Brazil.

đŸ‡§đŸ‡· My Favorite Matcha Spots in Brazil

Matcha Minka – SĂŁo Paulo

This is the first café in São Paulo dedicated entirely to matcha. I tried their soft serve matcha ice cream, and I'm still dreaming about it. It was creamy, earthy, and the perfect balance of sweet and bitter.

Chora CafĂ© – Rio de Janeiro

In the vibrant city of Rio, I discovered Chora CafĂ© in Botafogo. They have a dedicated matcha section with six drink options. The matcha mango drink was legitimately good – and I don't say that lightly.

COR CafĂ© – Curitiba

In Curitiba, I tried an Iced Coconut Matcha that was so refreshing I almost ordered a second one. The combination of matcha and coconut milk was a tropical dream.

✨ My Personal Reflection

Brazil taught me something beautiful: matcha doesn't have to be traditional to be authentic. Yumi's açaĂ-matcha fusion wasn't a diluted copy of Japanese tea culture – it was a celebration of her heritage, a blend of two worlds that created something entirely new.

As I sat in that tiny cafĂ©, sipping my Amazonian matcha, I realized that this is what makes travel so special. It's not about finding the "best" matcha in the world – it's about discovering how matcha can mean different things to different cultures.

Best Matcha Cafés in Bali: A Solo Traveller's Guide

Bali does not grow matcha. But now, the Island of the Gods has become one of the best places in Southeast Asia if you want to drink it. The reason is not just the tea. It is about what you get when Japanese tradition meets Balinese ideas on health. You can feel this when you sit in a place that makes you forget about your phone. I spent three weeks riding a scooter. I moved between cafĂ©s in Canggu where people work with their laptops open, and small food spots hidden in the jungle in Ubud. I wanted to find the best cup. Here is what I found. Why Bali's Matcha Scene Is Different In Tokyo, people see matcha as a daily practice. In Seoul, the look of matcha is key. In Bali, matcha helps with getting better.
