đŸ” Matcha in Bulgaria: Balkan Charm, Yogurt & My Sofia Matcha Love Affair

Written by MATCHA MAYA — a solo traveller following the world’s most memorable green cups. đŸ”

Matcha Maya’s note: What stayed with me in Bulgaria was not just the colour of the drink, but the small human moment around it—the conversation, the setting, and the feeling that I had found something local. ✨

Welcome to Bulgaria – where Balkan charm meets matcha! 🇧🇬

I'll never forget the moment I arrived in Sofia. The city was a beautiful blend of ancient history and modern energy, its streets lined with Orthodox churches and Soviet-era architecture. I had come to Bulgaria to discover how matcha could possibly fit into a country so deeply connected to its own yogurt and rose oil traditions.

As it turned out, Bulgaria had a surprising and delightful matcha scene waiting for me.

My journey began in the heart of Sofia. I wandered through the charming streets, past ancient ruins and bustling cafés, until I found a tiny matcha bar with a cozy, inviting atmosphere. The barista, a friendly Bulgarian woman named Iva, greeted me with a warm smile.

"In Bulgaria, we love to combine flavors," she said. "And matcha is the perfect canvas for our creativity."

She handed me a matcha latte and a traditional Bulgarian pastry. The matcha was creamy and perfectly balanced, and the pastry was flaky and delicious. I took a bite, followed by a sip of matcha, and I was transported. The sweetness of the pastry and the earthiness of the matcha were a match made in heaven.

🇧🇬 My Favorite Matcha Spots in Bulgaria

Matcha Bar – Sofia

In the heart of Sofia, I discovered a matcha bar that serves traditional matcha lattes and creative matcha desserts.

Chora CafĂ© – Plovdiv

This charming café in Plovdiv serves a delicious matcha latte with a view of the city's ancient amphitheater.

Taigu – Varna

In beautiful Varna, I found a matcha cafĂ© with a view of the Black Sea – and it was pure magic.

✨ My Personal Reflection

Bulgaria taught me that matcha can be as warm and welcoming as a Bulgarian smile. It's not just a drink – it's a moment of connection, a celebration of the simple pleasures in life.

Best Matcha Cafés in Bali: A Solo Traveller's Guide

Bali does not grow matcha. But now, the Island of the Gods has become one of the best places in Southeast Asia if you want to drink it. The reason is not just the tea. It is about what you get when Japanese tradition meets Balinese ideas on health. You can feel this when you sit in a place that makes you forget about your phone. I spent three weeks riding a scooter. I moved between cafĂ©s in Canggu where people work with their laptops open, and small food spots hidden in the jungle in Ubud. I wanted to find the best cup. Here is what I found. Why Bali's Matcha Scene Is Different In Tokyo, people see matcha as a daily practice. In Seoul, the look of matcha is key. In Bali, matcha helps with getting better. The island has always cared a lot about health and wellness. You can find things like yoga shalas, cold water dips, raw food, and jamu tonics everywhere. Matcha fits in well here.
