đŸ” Matcha in France: A Story of Elegance, Éclairs & My Parisian Matcha Love Affair

Written by MATCHA MAYA — a solo traveller following the world’s most memorable green cups. đŸ”

Matcha Maya’s note: What stayed with me in France was not just the colour of the drink, but the small human moment around it—the conversation, the setting, and the feeling that I had found something local. ✨

Welcome to France – where elegance meets matcha! đŸ‡«đŸ‡·

I'll never forget the moment I landed in Paris. The city was shrouded in a soft grey mist, and the streets glistened with rain. I was tired, cold, and desperately in need of warmth – both physical and emotional. I had come to France to discover how matcha could possibly fit into a country so deeply connected to its own culinary traditions.

As it turns out, Paris had a surprise waiting for me.

My journey began in Le Marais. I wandered through the narrow, winding streets, past vintage boutiques and art galleries, until I stumbled upon a tiny patisserie with a green neon sign that read "Matcha & Co." I pushed open the door, and a wave of warmth and the aroma of freshly baked pastries washed over me.

The owner, a stylish Parisian woman named Camille, greeted me with a warm smile. "You look like you need something special," she said. "Let me introduce you to our matcha éclair."

What arrived was a masterpiece. The éclair was perfectly golden, filled with a rich matcha crÚme pùtissiÚre, and topped with a glossy matcha glaze. One bite, and I was transported. The matcha was earthy and slightly bitter, perfectly balanced by the sweet, creamy filling. The pastry was light and flaky, dissolving on my tongue like a dream.

I sat in that tiny patisserie for hours, savoring every bite and watching the Parisian rain fall outside. In that moment, I realized that Paris doesn't just embrace matcha – it elevates it to an art form.

✨ My Personal Reflection

Bali does not grow matcha. But now, the Island of the Gods has become one of the best places in Southeast Asia if you want to drink it. The reason is not just the tea. It is about what you get when Japanese tradition meets Balinese ideas on health. You can feel this when you sit in a place that makes you forget about your phone.
