đŸ” Matcha in Greece: Ancient History, Baklava & My Athens Matcha Love Affair

Written by MATCHA MAYA — a solo traveller following the world’s most memorable green cups. đŸ”

Matcha Maya’s note: What stayed with me in Greece was not just the colour of the drink, but the small human moment around it—the conversation, the setting, and the feeling that I had found something local. ✨

Welcome to Greece – where ancient meets matcha! đŸ‡ŹđŸ‡·

I'll never forget the moment I arrived in Athens. The city was a beautiful blend of ancient history and modern energy, its streets filled with the scent of olive trees and the sound of bouzouki music. I had come to Greece to discover how matcha could possibly fit into a country so deeply connected to its own ancient traditions.

As it turned out, Greece had an ancient surprise waiting for me.

My journey began in the Plaka district. I wandered through the charming, winding streets, past ancient ruins and bustling tavernas, until I found a tiny café with a view of the Acropolis. The owner, a warm Greek woman named Eleni, greeted me with a smile.

"In Greece, we believe that every meal is a celebration of life," she said. "And matcha is a beautiful new addition to our table."

She handed me a matcha latte and a piece of baklava. The matcha was creamy and perfectly balanced, and the baklava was sweet and nutty. I took a bite of the baklava, followed by a sip of matcha, and I was transported. The sweetness of the baklava and the earthiness of the matcha were a match made in heaven.

Matcha Bar – Athens

In the heart of Athens, I discovered a matcha bar that serves traditional matcha lattes and creative matcha desserts.

Chora CafĂ© – Thessaloniki

This trendy café in Thessaloniki serves a delicious matcha latte with a view of the city's stunning waterfront.

Taigu – Santorini

On the beautiful island of Santorini, I found a matcha cafĂ© with a view of the caldera – and it was pure magic.

✨ My Personal Reflection

Greece taught me that matcha can be as timeless and beautiful as an ancient temple. It's not just a drink – it's a connection to history, a moment of wonder that reminds you of the beauty of the world.

Best Matcha Cafés in Bali: A Solo Traveller's Guide

Bali does not grow matcha. But now, the Island of the Gods has become one of the best places in Southeast Asia if you want to drink it. The reason is not just the tea. It is about what you get when Japanese tradition meets Balinese ideas on health. You can feel this when you sit in a place that makes you forget about your phone. I spent three weeks riding a scooter. I moved between cafĂ©s in Canggu where people work with their laptops open, and small food spots hidden in the jungle in Ubud. I wanted to find the best cup. Here is what I found. Why Bali's Matcha Scene Is Different In Tokyo, people see matcha as a daily practice. In Seoul, the look of matcha is key. In Bali, matcha helps with getting better.
