Matcha Maya’s note: What stayed with me in the Netherlands was not just the colour of the drink, but the small human moment around it—the conversation, the setting, and the feeling that I had found something local. ✨
Welcome to the Netherlands – where canals meet matcha! đłđ±
I'll never forget the moment I arrived in Amsterdam. The city was a beautiful maze of canals, bicycles, and charming gabled houses. I was exhausted from my journey, but the peaceful beauty of the city instantly calmed my soul. I had come to the Netherlands to discover how matcha could possibly fit into a country so deeply connected to its own coffee and stroopwafel culture.
As it turned out, the Netherlands had a delightful surprise waiting for me.
My journey began in De Pijp. I wandered through the vibrant, multicultural neighborhood, past bustling markets and cozy cafés, until I found a tiny matcha bar with a view of the canal. The barista, a friendly Dutch woman named Anne, greeted me with a warm smile.
"In Amsterdam, we love to cycle and drink matcha," she said. "It's the perfect combination."
She handed me a matcha latte and a stroopwafel. The matcha was creamy and perfectly balanced, and the stroopwafel was sweet and caramel-y. I dipped the stroopwafel into the matcha, and I was transported. The sweetness of the stroopwafel and the earthiness of the matcha were a match made in heaven.
